Bike Hot Hundred
The Hottest Ride in the South Saturday, August 21st, 2010
23 • 34 • 46 • 65 • 102 Mile Ride Options
Registration, for our 8th Annual Ride, Begins June 15th, 2010
Hot Hundred cycles through the rolling hills of rural West Central Alabama. Leave from Historic Capitol Park in downtown Tuscaloosa and bike to remote Greene County. These lightly traveled back roads will take you through the small communities of Romulus, Jena, Mantua, Lewiston, Snoddy and Ralph. The Fosters community will begin the return ride to Capitol Park.
Your hosts are the DCH Foundation and the Druid City Bicycle Club (DCBC). The DCBC is an organization dedicated to planning, sponsoring, encouraging and participating in recreational cycling activities in the West Alabama area.
Our members consist of road racers, triathletes, tourists, mountain bikers and fitness cyclists. The club supports community service projects and promotes advocacy for bicycle facilities in the Tuscaloosa area.
The DCBC club participates in cycling events around the Southeast, including organized tours, road races, triathlons, duathlons and mountain bike races. The club also organizes an annual USCF race weekend and century rides throughout the year, including the Hot Hundred.
Proceeds from the Hot Hundred will be used to benefit the mentally ill through the efforts of the Community Mental Health Task Force.

- What type of bike should I use?
A well-tuned road bike is the preference. We also see hybrids, cruisers, tandems, hand cycles, recumbent, and mountain bikes. Choose a bike that fits you well and feels comfortable.
- When do your rides fill up?
Typically, the ride is nearly full by ride date. We encourage you to pre-register. Registration begins June 15th, 2010.
- How do I register?
Registration begins June 15th, 2010. You may register online or in person at the Pre-Ride Registration and Party at VeloCity Pro Cycle on Friday, August 20th. The ride is sponsored by the DCH Foundation North Harbor Pavilion and the Druid City Bicycle Club. - Can I cancel?
Sorry, there is no cancellation--all monies will be considered direct donations to the DCH Foundation and the Community Mental Health Task Force.
- Do I have to sign up for the entire 102 miles?
We offer a variety of ride distance options: 23-34-46-65-102 miles. Many beginners and more leisurely riders, along with youngsters, choose the shorter distances. The first Rest Stop is at mile 11.5 so the 23 milers still get to enjoy one stop. These first miles are flat...rolling hills are encountered throughout the day beyond the 23 Mile mark. For information on training for a Century ride visit: http://www.kanbike.org/pages/training.php
- How do I train for a Century ride?
- How do mark you the route?
The road is clearly marked at each turn for all mileage options. Rest stops are marked with large banners.
- How fast do I have to ride?
The Hot Hundred is not a race. Many cyclists do the ride every year just to see if their speed is improving. You may see small groups form a pace-line and move along at a pretty fast pace. The majority however are riding at their own comfortable rate, enjoying the scenery and the camaraderie of fellow cyclists.
- Is there mechanical breakdown support on the road?
You will frequently see our SAG drivers (they are the ones with the flashing amber lights). They carry basic tools for fixing flats. Our VeloCity Pro Cycle mechanical team will be traveling along the routes. SAG drivers will do their best to connect you with a bike mechanic in case of a more serious problem.
- What does SAG stand for?
Generally the term SAG stands for Support and Gear. Their main goal is to provide a presence along the route. They carry the basics to assist in flat tire repair. They carry cell phones for emergency communications. They are capable of picking up riders who had to stop riding due to fatigue, injury, or mechanical failure.
- Do you offer SAG support?
Yes, absolutely!
- Do I need a helmet?
- What about bike safety?
- Where do I park my car?
There is ample parking at Capitol Park and the downtown Tuscaloosa area. A good number of our volunteers will be in the area throughout the day; however, we are not responsible for damaged, lost or stolen articles.
